Standards for Seamless Steel Pipes

Standards for Seamless Steel Pipes

The standard system for seamless steel pipes is very comprehensive. They are usually classified by production method (hot-rolled / cold-drawn), material (carbon steel / alloy steel / stainless steel), and application field. Below are the most commonly used seamless steel pipe standards in China (GB/T) and internationally (ASME/ASTM):

I. Chinese National Standards (GB/T Series)

These are the most frequently cited standards in domestic engineering and trade.

  1. Seamless steel pipes for structural applicationsGB/T 8162
    • Application: Used for general structures and mechanical structures.
    • Features: Mainly requires mechanical strength; less demanding on corrosion resistance or tightness for fluid transportation. Commonly used for supports, mechanical parts, etc.
  2. Seamless steel pipes for fluid transportationGB/T 8163
    • Application: For conveying water, oil, gas and other fluids.
    • Features: Must undergo hydrostatic testing, requiring high tightness and pressure resistance. The most commonly used standard in petrochemical, water supply and drainage projects.
  3. Seamless steel pipes for low and medium pressure boilersGB/T 3087
    • Application: For manufacturing superheated steam pipes, boiling water pipes, etc. for various low and medium pressure boilers.
    • Features: Certain requirements for high-temperature strength and microstructural stability, but relatively low pressure ratings.
  4. Seamless steel pipes for high-pressure boilersGB/T 5310
    • Application: For manufacturing superheater tubes, main steam pipes, etc. for high-pressure and ultra-high-pressure boilers.
    • Features: Extremely high requirements; must be made of high-quality carbon steel or alloy steel, with strict regulations on high-temperature creep strength, oxidation resistance, and non-destructive testing.
  5. Seamless steel pipes for petroleum crackingGB/T 9948
    • Application: For furnace tubes, heat exchanger tubes and pipelines in petroleum refineries.
    • Features: High temperature resistance, high pressure resistance, corrosion resistance; usually made of chromium-molybdenum alloy steel (such as 12CrMoG).
  6. High-pressure seamless steel pipes for fertilizer equipmentGB/T 6479
    • Application: For pipelines conveying high-temperature and high-pressure fluids in fertilizer equipment.
    • Features: Similar to high-pressure boiler tubes, often containing alloy elements such as vanadium (V) to improve strength.
  7. Stainless steel seamless pipes
    • GB/T 14976: For fluid transportation
    • GB/T 14975: For structural applications
    • GB/T 13296: For boilers and heat exchangers
    • Features: Standards developed for austenitic stainless steel (such as 304, 316L), with strict requirements on chemical composition and intergranular corrosion testing.

II. American Standards (ASME / ASTM Series)

These are mainstream internationally accepted standards, widely used in high-end fields such as oil and gas, petrochemical, and nuclear power.

  1. ASTM A106
    • Grades: A, B, C
    • Application: Carbon steel seamless pipes for high-temperature service.
    • Comparison: Similar to GB/T 8163, but mainly used for high-temperature steam transmission; the seamless version of API 5L Gr.B.
  2. ASTM A53
    • Grades: A, B
    • Application: Carbon steel seamless pipes for general purposes.
    • Features: Covers both seamless and welded pipes, commonly used for low-pressure fluid transportation and mechanical structures.
  3. ASTM A333
    • Grades: 1, 6, 8, etc.
    • Application: Seamless steel pipes for low-temperature service.
    • Features: Specially designed for low-temperature environments (such as -45°C or lower), requiring excellent low-temperature impact toughness to prevent brittle fracture.
  4. ASTM A335
    • Grades: P1, P5, P9, P11, P22, P91, etc.
    • Application: Ferritic alloy steel seamless pipes for high-temperature service.
    • Features: Corresponding to domestic alloy steel pipes (such as 15CrMoG, 12Cr1MoVG), widely used in power plant main steam pipelines and superheaters.
  5. ASTM A213 / A213M
    • Application: Ferritic and austenitic alloy steel seamless tubes for boilers, superheaters and heat exchangers.
    • Features: Focused on heat exchanger tubes, with high requirements for wall thickness uniformity and surface quality.
  6. ASTM A312
    • Application: Austenitic stainless steel seamless and welded pipes.
    • Features: Corresponding to domestic GB/T 14976, the most commonly used stainless steel pipe standard in the chemical industry.
  7. API 5L
    • Application: Line pipes.
    • Features: Specially used for long-distance oil and gas pipelines, divided into PSL1 (general level) and PSL2 (advanced level), with extremely high requirements for toughness and weldability.

III. Other Common Standards

  • DIN (German Standard): Such as DIN 2448, DIN 17175, common in the European market and some mechanical equipment.
  • JIS (Japanese Standard): Such as JIS G3456, JIS G3458, often used for imported equipment matching.

Summary

  • General water/gas transmission: Choose GB/T 8163 or ASTM A106.
  • Power plant boilers: Choose GB/T 5310 or ASTM A335.
  • Chemical heat exchange: Choose GB/T 9948 or ASTM A213.
  • Stainless steel pipelines: Choose GB/T 14976 or ASTM A312.

What are the materials of reducers?

The material system for reducers is identical to that for tees and elbows. Selection is mainly based on the conveyed medium (corrosiveness, temperature, pressure) and service environment (industrial/civil, buried/aboveground). Materials are primarily divided into two categories: metallic and non-metallic. The detailed classification and applicable scenarios…

What are the ratings of reducers?

The “rating” of a reducer mainly refers to its pressure rating (pressure-bearing capacity) and wall thickness rating (directly related to pressure). Two major systems are widely used globally: the metric system (PN) and the American standard system (Class / Sch). For some plastic reducers, the…

What are the dimensions of the reducer?

The dimensions of a reducer mainly include four key parameters: nominal diameter (large end / small end), length, taper angle, and wall thickness, in accordance with standards such as GB/T (Chinese) and ASME (American). Clear standard dimensions are specified for different types (concentric / eccentric)…

Classification of Reducers

Reducers can be classified according to core dimensions such as structural form, manufacturing process, connection method, material, and pressure rating. Different classifications correspond to different application scenarios and technical requirements. The systematic and clear classification system is as follows: I. Classification by Structural Form (The…
