What is Magnetic Particle Testing?

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT for short) is a non-destructive testing method that uses magnetic phenomena to detect surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials. It is one of the most commonly used, sensitive and convenient surface inspection techniques in industry. The concept of magnetic particle testing is explained below in terms of its principle, characteristics, scope of application and other aspects:

1. Basic Principle

The core principle of magnetic particle testing is the leakage magnetic field. After a ferromagnetic material is magnetized, if there are defects such as cracks or porosity on or near the surface, they will block the normal passage of magnetic lines of force. The magnetic lines will bend at the defects, and some will escape the material surface, forming a “leakage magnetic field”.If magnetic particles (usually fine black or red particles) are applied to the material surface at this time, they will be attracted by the leakage magnetic field, forming clearly visible magnetic indications at the defect locations.By observing the shape, size and position of the magnetic indications, the nature of the defects can be determined.

2. Scope of Application

Magnetic particle testing is mainly used for:

  • Ferromagnetic materials: such as carbon steel, alloy steel, iron, and some types of stainless steel (must be magnetizable).
  • Surface and near-surface defects: cracks, laps, inclusions, incomplete penetration, etc.

It cannot detect non-ferromagnetic materials (such as copper, aluminum, austenitic stainless steel, etc.).

3. Main Characteristics

  • High sensitivity: can detect very fine surface cracks.
  • Simple operation and low cost: equipment and consumables are relatively inexpensive, making on-site testing convenient.
  • Strong intuitiveness: defect shapes are directly displayed by magnetic indications.
  • Fast testing speed: suitable for rapid inspection of batch parts.
  • Limitations: only applicable to ferromagnetic materials and not sensitive to deep internal defects.

4. Common Magnetization Methods

To magnetize the material, common magnetization methods include:

  • Yoke method
  • Current passing method
  • Coil method
  • Central conductor method

Different methods apply to workpieces of different shapes and sizes.

5. Application Fields

Magnetic particle testing is widely used in:

  • Weldments, castings and forgings
  • Mechanical parts (shafts, gears, crankshafts, springs, etc.)
  • Steel structures, bridges and pressure vessels
  • Automotive, aerospace and shipbuilding
  • Equipment maintenance in petrochemical, electric power and other industries

Summary

Magnetic Particle Testing is a non-destructive testing method that uses leakage magnetic fields to attract magnetic particles and indicate surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials. Featuring high sensitivity, simple operation, low cost and intuitive results, it is one of the most commonly used surface defect inspection technologies in industry.

What are the materials of reducers?

The material system for reducers is identical to that for tees and elbows. Selection is mainly based on the conveyed medium (corrosiveness, temperature, pressure) and service environment (industrial/civil, buried/aboveground). Materials are primarily divided into two categories: metallic and non-metallic. The detailed classification and applicable scenarios…

What are the ratings of reducers?

The “rating” of a reducer mainly refers to its pressure rating (pressure-bearing capacity) and wall thickness rating (directly related to pressure). Two major systems are widely used globally: the metric system (PN) and the American standard system (Class / Sch). For some plastic reducers, the…

What are the dimensions of the reducer?

The dimensions of a reducer mainly include four key parameters: nominal diameter (large end / small end), length, taper angle, and wall thickness, in accordance with standards such as GB/T (Chinese) and ASME (American). Clear standard dimensions are specified for different types (concentric / eccentric)…

Classification of Reducers

Reducers can be classified according to core dimensions such as structural form, manufacturing process, connection method, material, and pressure rating. Different classifications correspond to different application scenarios and technical requirements. The systematic and clear classification system is as follows: I. Classification by Structural Form (The…
