Standards for Reducers

Standards for reducers serve as the core basis for their design, production, inspection and installation. Globally, there are three major systems: Chinese National Standards (GB), American National Standards (ASME/ANSI), and International Standards (ISO). In addition, there are industry-specific standards (e.g., petrochemical, power industry). A detailed interpretation of key standards is as follows:

I. Chinese National Standards (GB/T Core System)

1. Basic General Standards

GB/T 12459-2017 Steel butt-welding pipe fittings — Types and parameters

  • Core content: Specifies the types, nominal diameters (DN15~DN1200), nominal pressures (PN0.25~PN42.0), radius of curvature, wall thickness schedules and dimensional tolerances of steel butt-welding reducers (concentric / eccentric).
  • Scope: Carbon steel, stainless steel and alloy steel butt-welding reducers (seamless / welded).
  • Key parameters: Recommended taper angle of concentric reducers is 20°, length formula L=2×tan(θ/2)D−d(D=OD of large end, d=OD of small end); eccentric reducers are aligned at the flat bottom side, offset = radius of large end − radius of small end.

GB/T 13401-2017 Steel plate butt-welding pipe fittings

  • Core content: Dimensions, manufacturing requirements and test methods for welded rolled / press-welded reducers (large size DN≥600).
  • Scope: Carbon steel plate reducers for low-pressure applications (PN≤1.6MPa).

2. Material and Performance Standards

  • GB/T 18248-2018 Seamless steel tubes for gas cylinders (raw material standard for seamless reducers)
  • GB/T 3077-2015 Alloy structure steels (material standard for alloy steel reducers)
  • GB/T 1220-2021 Stainless steel bars (material standard for stainless steel reducers)

3. Inspection and Acceptance Standards

  • GB/T 2650-2020 Impact test method on welded joints
  • GB/T 2651-2020 Tensile test method on welded joints
  • GB/T 11345-2013 Manual ultrasonic testing and acceptance grading for welds (UT testing of reducer welds)

II. American National Standards (ASME/ANSI System)

1. Core Fitting Standards

ASME B16.9-2020 Factory-Made Wrought Buttwelding Fittings

  • Core content: Dimensions, pressure ratings (Class150~Class2500), wall thickness schedules (Sch10~XXS) and material requirements for ASME-standard reducers.
  • Key parameters: Long-radius reducer length L=3×(D−d), short-radius reducer L=1.5×(D−d)(D=OD of large end, d=OD of small end); flat-bottom design of eccentric reducers for compatibility with ANSI B16.5 flanges.
  • Material specifications: ASTM A234 (carbon / alloy steel butt-welding fittings), ASTM A403 (stainless steel butt-welding fittings).

ASME B16.5-2023 Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings

  • Core content: Flange dimensions, facing types (RF, MFM) and pressure rating matching requirements for flanged reducers.

2. Material Standards

  • ASTM A234 WPB/WP11/WP22: Materials for carbon / alloy steel butt-welding reducers
  • ASTM A403 WP304/WP316L: Materials for stainless steel butt-welding reducers
  • ASTM A105: Materials for forged threaded / flanged reducers

III. International Standards (ISO System)

ISO 4200:2019 Steel butt-welding fittings

  • Core content: Integrates core parameters of GB and ASME standards, specifies nominal diameters (DN), nominal pressures (PN) and dimensional tolerances of reducers, applicable to reducers in global trade.
  • Key features: Compatible with metric (DN/PN) and imperial (NPS/Class) systems, defines general design criteria for concentric / eccentric reducers.

IV. Industry-Specific Standards

1. Petrochemical Industry

  • SH/T 3408-2012 Steel butt-welding pipe fittings (Sinopec standard, equivalent to GB/T 12459, supplemented with special requirements for petrochemical applications, e.g., material selection for H₂S-resistant reducers)
  • API 5L-2022 Line Pipe (raw material standard for reducers in petroleum pipelines)

2. Power Industry

  • DL/T 695-2019 Steel butt-welding pipe fittings for power stations (for high-temperature and high-pressure reducers in power stations, requiring creep performance testing of alloy steel materials to match boiler piping systems)

3. Plastic Reducer Standards

  • GB/T 10002.2-2023 Unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U) fittings for water supply (PVC reducers)
  • GB/T 18742.2-2017 Polypropylene pipe systems for hot and cold water — Part 2: Fittings (PPR reducers)
  • GB/T 13663.2-2018 Polyethylene (PE) pipe systems for water supply — Part 2: Fittings (PE reducers)

V. Principles for Standard Selection

  • Local applicability: GB/T standards are preferred for domestic projects; ASME B16.9 or ISO 4200 are preferred for overseas or foreign-funded projects.
  • Industry adaptation: SH/T 3408 for petrochemical projects, DL/T 695 for power projects, and material-specific standards for plastic piping.
  • System consistency: Within the same piping system, reducer standards shall be consistent with those of pipes, valves and flanges (e.g., GB pipes with GB reducers, ASME pipes with ASME reducers).

What are the materials of reducers?

The material system for reducers is identical to that for tees and elbows. Selection is mainly based on the conveyed medium (corrosiveness, temperature, pressure) and service environment (industrial/civil, buried/aboveground). Materials are primarily divided into two categories: metallic and non-metallic. The detailed classification and applicable scenarios…

What are the ratings of reducers?

The “rating” of a reducer mainly refers to its pressure rating (pressure-bearing capacity) and wall thickness rating (directly related to pressure). Two major systems are widely used globally: the metric system (PN) and the American standard system (Class / Sch). For some plastic reducers, the…

What are the dimensions of the reducer?

The dimensions of a reducer mainly include four key parameters: nominal diameter (large end / small end), length, taper angle, and wall thickness, in accordance with standards such as GB/T (Chinese) and ASME (American). Clear standard dimensions are specified for different types (concentric / eccentric)…

Classification of Reducers

Reducers can be classified according to core dimensions such as structural form, manufacturing process, connection method, material, and pressure rating. Different classifications correspond to different application scenarios and technical requirements. The systematic and clear classification system is as follows: I. Classification by Structural Form (The…
