Surface protection and packaging of pipe fittings are critical steps to ensure that products do not rust, deform or become damaged during transportation, storage and installation. Due to the irregular shapes of pipe fittings (such as elbows, flanges, tees, etc.), their protection and packaging are more complex than those of ordinary straight pipes. The detailed procedures and methods for surface protection and packaging of pipe fittings are as follows:
I. Surface Protection Treatment
Before packaging, the surfaces of pipe fittings must be thoroughly cleaned and coated with protective materials to isolate them from air and moisture.
Surface Cleaning
- Impurity removal: Remove residual oil, iron chips, welding slag and dust from the production process.
- Rust removal: Perform shot blasting or sand blasting as required to remove surface scale and rust, achieving the specified cleanliness level (e.g., Sa2.5), and increase surface roughness to improve coating adhesion.
Anti-corrosion Coating
- Anti-rust oil: This is the most common protection method. Spray or brush anti-rust oil (divided into hard film and soft film types) on the cleaned surface to form an oil film that prevents rusting.
- Painting: For carbon steel pipe fittings, primer (such as epoxy zinc-rich primer) and topcoat are usually applied. Coating thickness shall comply with standards (such as API or customer requirements), and colors are usually specified by standards or customers (commonly blue, red or gray).
- Hot-dip galvanizing: For pipe fittings requiring long-term outdoor storage or high corrosion resistance, overall hot-dip galvanizing is performed to form a dense zinc layer on the surface.
- Plastic wrapping: After oiling or painting, individual fittings are often wrapped with shrink film or stretch film to prevent scratches on the coating and contamination by dust.
II. Internal Protection
The inner cavities of pipe fittings tend to accumulate moisture or foreign matter and therefore require special protection.
- Plugs / Caps: Use plastic (PE) or metal plugs to seal the ends of fittings, preventing rainwater, dust, insects or other foreign objects from entering the interior. For threaded fittings, thread protectors must be used to avoid thread damage or rust.
- Waterproof treatment: For large fittings, waterproof tape or plastic sheeting is sometimes wrapped around the ports for sealing.
III. Packaging Methods
Appropriate packaging methods are selected based on the weight, size, transportation distance and customer requirements of the fittings.
Pallet Packing
Suitable for small and medium-sized pipe fittings. Stack fittings neatly on wooden or steel pallets, wrap tightly with stretch film, and secure with packing straps (steel or plastic straps) to prevent scattering during transit.
Wooden Case Packing
Suitable for high-value, precise or fragile pipe fittings (such as stainless steel and alloy steel fittings). Place fittings in plywood or wooden cases, which can be filled with foam, paper scraps or bubble wrap for cushioning and shock resistance.
Bulk / Nude Packing
Suitable for large pipe fittings (such as large-diameter flanges and elbows) or cases with low packaging requirements. Fittings are usually directly lifted and loaded into containers or open trucks, sometimes with wooden blocks or straw mats placed between them to prevent collision.
Container Shipping
Most exported pipe fittings are shipped in containers. Attention shall be paid to the container’s weight limit and space utilization during packaging to ensure that goods do not shift inside (goods are usually secured to container walls or floors with binding straps).
IV. Marking & Labeling
Clear marking must be applied after packaging is completed.
- Product marking: Mark product specifications, material, wall thickness, standard number, batch number and heat number on each fitting or package for traceability.
- Shipping mark: Print or affix shipping marks on packages or pallets, including destination, item number, gross/net weight, dimensions and other shipping information for logistics and consignee inspection.
Summary
Surface protection and packaging of pipe fittings is a systematic project, with the core principles of moisture proof, rust proof and damage proof. Through scientific coating treatment, tight internal sealing and stable external packaging, pipe fittings can be maintained in good condition from the factory to the construction site.
